Nature writing walks at Hengistbury Head

Nature writing walks inspired by Jane Goodall’s work are taking place at Hengistbury Head on Sunday.

The Bournemouth Writing Festival is organising the event with Bournemouth University and Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots programme as part of this year’s Bournemouth Writing Prize.

People of all ages are invited to explore the area’s wildlife, coastline and landscape while using creative prompts to develop stories, poems and ideas for possible competition entries.

Participants should meet at Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre at 9.30am for a 10am start, with the guided walks expected to last up to 90 minutes.

There will be 3 routes based around the Roots and Shoots themes of animals, people and the environment, with the first letters forming APE in recognition of Dr Goodall’s work with chimpanzees.

Stephen Gregory will lead the animals walk, Hayden Scott-Pratt will explore people’s relationship with the environment, and poet Jamie Derrick will guide the environment route.

Festival Director Dominic Wong said: “These walks are designed for everyone”, including experienced writers, people returning to writing and those who simply enjoy being outdoors.

The family and dog-friendly event will support Roots and Shoots, with everyone attending receiving a planter and sunflower seeds to take home.

Advance registration is required.
