The A350 at Charlton Marshall remains closed after a fire engine caught fire while responding to an incident.
The crew were travelling to the call when the fire began, but they were able to stop the vehicle safely and no injuries were reported.
An update issued at 8.30pm confirmed the fire had destroyed the cab of the engine, while the nearby grass verge and telegraph cables were also damaged.
Paramedics checked the firefighters involved as a precaution, with no health concerns identified.
The road will stay closed while the damaged vehicle is recovered and further assessments are carried out.
There may also be repairs needed to the carriageway before the A350 can reopen.
An investigation will now take place to establish what caused the fire.
Drivers planning to travel through Charlton Marshall in the morning are being advised to check their route before setting off.
