Fire service issues heat warning for Dorset

Residents in BCP and Dorset are being urged to take extra care outdoors as temperatures rise.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service says hot and dry conditions can increase the chance of heath and woodland fires, following several large incidents across its area in recent years.

The service is asking people not to have barbecues or campfires on heathland or in open spaces, where they may also be banned, and to make sure cigarettes are fully extinguished rather than being thrown onto the ground or from vehicles.

Anyone who sees a countryside fire should move to a safe place and call 999 straight away, providing as much information as possible about the location.

People are also being advised not to have bonfires at home during the high-risk conditions, while barbecue coals and fire pits should be soaked with water and left until completely cold before disposal.

The warning also covers Dorset’s waterways, where cold water shock can still affect swimmers during warm weather.

Group Manager Shaun Milton said the forecast conditions meant people should “take care when out and about” and consider changing plans where needed.

Drivers heading out during the warmer weather are also being advised to take bottled water, as unexpected congestion could leave people in hot vehicles and lead to dehydration.
