A new volunteer mentor scheme is being launched to support people moving on from homelessness.
Home Support Together will match trained volunteers with people who have recently moved into accommodation, offering friendly one-to-one support as they settle in, build confidence and work to sustain their tenancy.
Residents across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being encouraged to get involved, with volunteers able to help people with practical tasks such as bills and appointments, or simply provide someone to talk to.
The scheme offers flexible volunteering for a couple of hours each week, with full training, support and DBS checks provided, and no previous experience is needed for those who want to help.
Councillor Kieron Wilson, Cabinet member for Housing and Regulatory Services, said moving on from homelessness is “about much more than having a roof over your head”.
He said people need support to “rebuild their confidence” and feel part of a community again, with volunteer mentors offering encouragement and practical help when it is most needed.
Drop-in sessions will be held at libraries in Creekmoor, Poole, Kinson, Bournemouth and Rossmore between Monday 22 June and Tuesday 14 July for anyone interested in finding out more.
The council says having a safe place to live is only the first step after homelessness, with many people facing isolation and practical challenges when starting again.
Volunteer mentors are expected to help people feel supported, maintain their home and move forward positively.
