Support for tougher Bournemouth parking fines

Councillors across the political spectrum have supported plans for tougher enforcement against illegal parking in Bournemouth during the busy summer season.

The proposed trial would see higher fines alongside increased use of vehicle clamping, towing and storage charges.

Richard Herrett said the measures would help tackle rising levels of illegal parking and called for the powers to become permanent across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

However, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has said the scheme must meet stricter conditions after concerns over how last year’s pilot was delivered.

Several councillors argued that enforcement alone would not solve the issue, with calls for greater investment in park-and-ride services, cycle lanes, public transport and safer walking routes.

BCP Council has not yet confirmed the dates or locations for this year’s trial, although it is expected to mirror last summer’s scheme.
