Former Dorset officer charged after Castlepoint incident

A former Dorset Police officer is due to appear in court charged with causing grievous bodily harm without intent.

Lorne Castle, 47, is accused of seriously injuring Daniel Meyrick during an altercation outside the Castlepoint Shopping Centre on June 19, 2025.

The incident happened shortly after Castle had left his role as a police constable with Dorset Police.

Reports at the time described him carrying out a “citizen’s arrest” after detaining a suspected shoplifter outside the Nike store.

According to the charge, brought under Section 20 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, he is accused of unlawfully and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Castle is scheduled to appear before Reading Magistrates’ Court on May 27.
