Dorset Council has confirmed a school crossing patrol in Church Road, Ferndown, will be withdrawn at the end of the school term.
Councillors raised concerns about the decision, questioning whether safety risks for pupils still remain.
They also asked if the patrol could continue if alternative funding was provided.
However, highways portfolio holder Jon Andrews said the decision was not based on cost.
He explained that new zebra crossings have been installed on the road, and council policy is not to operate both a crossing patrol and a zebra crossing in the same location.
The council says this is to avoid confusion for drivers.
Officials added that crossing patrol staff will continue to be employed where they are considered necessary.
