Funding boost for Dorset history project
Dorset History Centre has received initial funding support for a major archive improvement project.
The centre has secured development funding of £603777 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for its Past Lives Future Proofed project, which aims to expand secure storage and improve public areas at the site.
The funding will allow Dorset History Centre to develop plans for a larger project and apply for a full grant of £3.8 million.
The centre holds more than 1000 years of Dorset’s recorded history, including paper documents, photographs, film and parchment records relating to people, places and events.
More than 35 years after the building opened, existing climate controlled storage areas are approaching capacity.
The project will explore ways to expand storage, preserve digital records and improve access for the public.
The development phase will last around 18 months and will include opportunities for volunteers and community consultation on plans to extend and improve the building.
