Police launch checks on drivers at Poole

Police have launched a new operation targeting drink and drug driving among travellers arriving in Dorset.

Roads Policing officers are carrying out roadside checks on drivers arriving by plane and ferry to make sure they are not over the legal limit before continuing their journeys.

The operation focuses on people who may have been drinking during flights or ferry journeys before driving away from ports and airports.

During the launch of the campaign at the Port of Poole on 7 April, officers stopped and spoke with passengers in 97 vehicles entering the area.

Police confirmed that none of the drivers checked during the operation were over the drink drive limit.

Inspector Lee Turner said people sometimes forget they may still need to drive after travelling and warned that alcohol combined with travel fatigue can affect reaction times and driving ability.

Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said there is “never an excuse” for driving while intoxicated and thanked officers involved in keeping Dorset’s roads safe.
