Meeting held to protect Upton Heath site

Plans to protect Upton Heath are being discussed after concerns about potential mineral excavation.

A meeting was held involving MP Vikki Slade, Dorset Wildlife Trust and representatives from Dorset and BCP Councils following news that part of the site is due to be auctioned on 29 April, prompting urgent talks on how to safeguard its future.

The heath, located within Mid Dorset and North Poole, is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and supports all six of Britain’s native reptiles as well as 16 species of dragonfly, making it an important habitat for wildlife.

Historic mineral extraction permissions dating back to the 1950s mean a future owner could reopen the site to excavation, raising concerns about public access and the potential impact on wildlife if mining activity were to resume nearby.

Vikki Slade described the heath as “a natural jewel in the crown” and said its mix of habitats gives it international ecological importance, adding that it is “a truly unique environment we are lucky to call our own”.

Discussions at the meeting included funding options to secure the land or introduce further protections, alongside a public fundraising campaign and petition aimed at supporting efforts to keep the heath accessible.
