Open air Tempest returns with Brownsea

A large scale open air Shakespeare production will return in Poole this summer.

Brownsea Open Air Theatre will stage The Tempest from 3 to 15 August in the grounds of Canford School, presenting one of the South’s largest theatrical productions in an outdoor setting.

The play explores themes of betrayal, power and redemption, with audiences watching Shakespeare’s story unfold against a natural backdrop during the company’s annual open air season.

Director Brian Woolton said the play works particularly well in an outdoor environment.

He said “The Tempest is a wonderful play to stage outdoors. It’s full of magic, mischief and imagination” adding that he is looking forward to leading the company again and welcoming audiences back for the production.

Brownsea Open Air Theatre was founded in 1964 to mark the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth and first staged performances on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour.

Since then the organisation has involved more than 1700 volunteers and raised over 300000 for local charities while presenting large scale outdoor theatre productions.
