Coast photography exhibition set for Poole

An outdoor photography exhibition exploring England’s seaside culture will open in Poole town centre this spring.

England-on-Sea by photographer Brent Jones will be displayed across Falkland Square and Kingland from 17 March until 14 June, presenting 20 images that document how people interact with coastal places around England.

The project was created during a nationwide journey around the English coastline, with Jones travelling and living from a van while visiting coastal communities and observing everyday life along the shore. He said the work was shaped by childhood memories of growing up by the sea, explaining he returned “to discover how it is changing economically, socially, and culturally.”

The series focuses on shared seaside experiences rather than individuals, capturing humour, everyday moments and the character of England’s coastal communities during a period shaped by events including Brexit, COVID and wider economic change.

The exhibition has been commissioned by Poole Business Improvement District and supported by Dorset National Landscape. Jacqui Rock from Poole BID said Poole provides “the perfect setting” for a project exploring how people connect with seaside places.

Organisers hope the exhibition will encourage visitors to reflect on what makes the coast special and how communities can protect it in the future.
