Local folk singer gets national recognition

A local folk singer and dementia choir leader is celebrating national radio success.

Amy Hopwood releases her new album Gone to flowers tomorrow, yet the record has already gained significant airplay, with more than 50 radio DJs supporting tracks and several naming it their album of the week ahead of its official launch.

The highlight came when her song Breadcrumbs was played on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show by Mark Radcliffe. Amy said she had no warning. “I had no idea it was going to be played,” she said, adding that she rushed to catch up online after a friend alerted her and “didn’t stop smiling for at least 24 hours”.

Gone to flowers features 13 songs exploring themes of endings and mortality, blending folk influences with touches of Mexican Day of the Dead on Like a leaf, Eastern European sounds on A nice wooden bench and Americana on It doesn’t matter now.

The album also includes layered harmonies, field recordings and whispered proverbs from her dementia choir members and social media followers. Amy said that while the subjects include divorce, ageing and death, listeners have found the music comforting and reassuring.
