AUB talent shines at BAFTA awards

Success at the BAFTAs has put Arts University Bournemouth in the spotlight after two films with strong AUB links took home awards.

BA (Hons) Film Production graduate Lars Thomas Skare worked as Assistant Director on Sentimental Value, which won the award for Best Film Not In The English Language, while BA (Hons) Creative Writing guest speaker Dean Atta secured Best Short Animation for Two Black Boys in Paradise.

Atta’s film follows Eden, 19, and Dula, 18, as they navigate self acceptance and love in a world that denies them both, imagining a paradise free from shame and judgement, and is adapted from a poem in his collection There is still Love Here.

The BAFTA winning short, written and executive produced by Atta, will be screened at the Bournemouth Writing Festival, where he will read from his poetry and discuss the development of the project in person.

Festival Director Dominic Wong said welcoming Atta to Bournemouth following his win shows the level of creative talent being drawn to the town and highlights how writing can lead to significant industry recognition.

James Cole, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Creative Writing at AUB, said the award demonstrates the strength of storytelling across different forms and added that the university is proud to see a visiting tutor recognised at that level.

The Bournemouth Writing Festival runs from 24 to 26 April across venues in the town centre, including AUB’s Palace Court Theatre.
