Council tax in Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole will rise by 6.74 per cent in the next financial year after government approval.

BCP Council had already planned a rise within the standard limit allowed without a referendum and applied earlier this month for additional flexibility. Yesterday, the government confirmed it would allow a further increase, taking the total rise to six point seven four per cent for local residents.

The council said the additional income is expected to support essential services across the area, including care for vulnerable adults, children and families, alongside keeping streets safe and clean.

Alongside the council tax decision, government announced it will cover ninety per cent of BCP Council’s historic special educational needs and disabilities deficit, subject to an agreed local reform plan. Details on timing are yet to be confirmed and the remaining debt will continue to attract interest.

Councillor Mike Cox, portfolio holder for finance, said the council welcomed the flexibility and government recognition of SEND pressures, adding that finances remain tight and wider reform is still needed.
