Charminster Library in Bournemouth will remain closed for around three months following the discovery of asbestos and structural damage after a partial ceiling collapse in December.
Structural engineers assessed the building in early January, and a further inspection revealed asbestos in the affected area and repairs needed for structural joists.
Councillor Andy Martin, Cabinet Member responsible for libraries, said the safety of visitors and staff is the priority and the library cannot reopen until essential work is completed. He added that Charminster Library continues to be a key part of BCP Council’s Library Strategy, with plans to maintain modern and inclusive access to books, learning and digital resources across all 24 libraries.
Borrowers can return items at any Libraries West branch, and alternative libraries for customers include Winton, Boscombe and Castlepoint. The council has promised to share updates on repairs and the expected reopening date as soon as more information is available.
