Bournemouth route 36 bus service to continue

Bus route 36 will continue operating after a review of subsidised services by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council.

The route connects Talbot Village, Branksome Woods, Kinson and West Howe with Bournemouth Town Centre and had been a focus of concern from residents and councillors following suggestions it could be withdrawn. The council supports bus services with lower passenger numbers, including evening and Sunday journeys, to help maintain local connections.

A public consultation was carried out to assess which routes residents valued most, with around three thousand responses received. More than five hundred submissions related specifically to route 36. The review considered passenger numbers, journey purpose, frequency of use, accessibility needs and value for money across all supported routes.

Councillors Dawn Logan and Matt Gillett, who represent Talbot and Branksome Woods, said residents had been worried about losing the service and welcomed confirmation it will continue. Councillor Logan said buses are a lifeline for many people, while Councillor Gillett said the route is particularly important for older residents, disabled people and those without access to a car.

Councillor Millie Earl, Leader of BCP Council, said the review helped ensure funding is targeted where it is most needed so residents can continue to make everyday journeys. BCP Council’s cabinet is due to discuss ongoing support for bus services at a meeting next Wednesday.
