Plans for phone-free kids in Dorset schools
Dorset Council has released new guidance to help schools create phone-free days and support families in managing children’s smartphone use outside the classroom.
Developed with school leaders, young people and the Dorset Education Board, the material encourages all schools to prohibit mobile phone use during the school day as part of their behaviour policies and to promote phone-free environments, particularly in first and primary settings.
The guidance recognises that most phone use takes place beyond school grounds and advises families to delay giving children smartphones until at least age 14 unless there is a clear need. For parents who want their child to be contactable on school journeys, it suggests using simple phones without internet access.
Schools are also encouraged to make reasonable adjustments where required for pupils with medical, safeguarding or caring responsibilities.
Councillor Clare Sutton said the approach supports calmer classrooms and stronger learning by reducing distractions. The guidance also highlights wider community measures, including clear communication with families, teaching on digital literacy and practical steps such as working with bus companies on any changes affecting travel routines. Further advice for parents will be available at a spring term event.
