Clerks sought to shape new town councils
Senior administrative roles have been advertised for the newly approved town councils in Bournemouth, Poole and Broadstone, with recruitment now under way ahead of their launch this year.
Bournemouth and Poole Town Councils are each seeking a town clerk and responsible finance officer, full time positions described as central to ensuring transparent decision making, effective financial control and modern, community focused administration across the two new authorities.
Both full‑time posts offer a 37‑hour week, with salaries starting at £74,454 and rising to £89,081, making them among the highest‑paid clerk roles in the country.
Broadstone Town Council is also recruiting for a combined town clerk and responsible finance officer role on a part time basis, with the new council expected to play a key role in shaping priorities for residents despite its smaller scale.
The council is offering 18.5 hours per week, with a starting salary of £48,226 and the potential to earn up to £52,413.
The posts have been described as a rare opportunity to set standards, modernise processes and build trusted councils from the outset, with responsibilities including leading administration, managing budgets, overseeing meetings and ensuring compliance with national legislation.
Parish and town councils are legally required to appoint a clerk and responsible finance officer, with candidates expected to hold the Certificate in Local Council Administration to enable councils to exercise full powers.
BCP Council voted last year to create the three new town councils following a community governance review, aimed at strengthening local representation and giving residents more direct influence over services and community projects.
The councils will be established on April one this year, with their first elections due to take place in May.
In addition, Christchurch Town Council is recruiting for a new financial manager with a salary of up to £47,181 depending on qualifications and experience.
The permanent role is being offered on a 25‑hours‑per‑week contract with a salary range of £44,075–£47,181 pro rata, depending on experience and qualifications.
