BCP given £38m to fix potholes
BCP Council will receive more than thirty eight million pounds over the next four years to improve and maintain roads across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
The funding was confirmed in the Autumn Budget and represents twice the amount previously pledged by the former government. It includes a baseline allocation of twenty seven million seven hundred and fifty thousand pounds and a further ten million two hundred and ninety one thousand pounds in incentive funding.
The incentive element will be available when councils publish clear data on potholes and maintenance activity, as part of a national move to link more funding to transparency. More than a third of England’s local roads budget now depends on councils setting out their plans openly.
The allocation forms part of a national seven point three billion pound commitment to local road maintenance. The South West will receive one and a half billion pounds, the largest share of any region.
Jessica Toale MP said that roads in Bournemouth West need sustained attention and that the funding will help deliver visible improvements for residents. She said the government had pledged to fix an extra one million potholes each year and that this plan gives councils the means to address long-standing repair backlogs.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the national funding aims to help councils prevent further potholes, repair existing damage and support safer journeys. She highlighted road maintenance as an important factor in keeping communities connected and supporting local growth.
The announcement follows wider Autumn Budget measures designed to support households, including steps to reduce energy bills and the freezing of regulated rail fares and prescription charges.
