Dorset Council to sell 78 unused sites
Dorset Council will release 78 surplus sites to create more affordable housing, support regeneration, and boost the local economy.
The disposal programme, part of the council’s new Strategic Asset Management Plan, could raise £46.7 million to reinvest in roads, schools, and frontline services.
The plan marks a major shift in how the council manages its £440 million property portfolio of more than 1,500 sites. Each asset will now be reviewed every three years to decide whether it should be retained, repurposed, or sold.
Some land will support the delivery of new social rent homes, while other sites will help create community facilities or attract private investment to town centres.
The strategy also focuses on environmental performance, with carbon reduction and energy efficiency now central to every review. It strengthens opportunities for town and parish councils to take on underused buildings through Community Asset Transfers.
Councillor Richard Biggs said the goal is to make the best use of public land and reinvest the proceeds for the benefit of residents. The proposals will be considered by Cabinet on 11 November.
The full list of 78 sites has not been provided so far, but doesn’t include the vacant buildings at site of the old East Dorset District Council offices in Furzehill, Wimborne (pictured above).
