Coastal defence plan to be updated

BCP Council is preparing to update its long-term coastal defence strategy to ensure continued protection for homes, businesses and natural habitats from flooding and erosion over the next 100 years.

Cabinet will review proposals on 29 October to update the Poole Bay, Poole Harbour and Wareham Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) Strategy. The revised plan will reflect the latest climate data, environmental guidance and funding arrangements.

The original strategy set out a sustainable approach to managing coastal risks through to 2115, identifying projects for the first 15–20 years. Many of these have already been completed, including beach nourishment and groyne upgrades at Hengistbury Head, and flood defence works from Poole Bridge to Hunger Hill.

The review will be led by BCP Council on behalf of Dorset Council and the Environment Agency. It will include updated modelling of wave and sediment movement, revised economic assessments, and environmental studies addressing biodiversity, habitat compensation and climate resilience.

A national grant of £650,000 has been secured to fund the review, ensuring there will be no cost to BCP Council.

If approved, the council will appoint a consultant through the South Coast FCERM Framework, managed by Havant Borough Council, to carry out the updated strategy for the Southern Coastal Group area, which includes Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
