Christchurch Carnival funds local causes

More than £5,500 has been shared with local causes by Christchurch Carnival, announced at a celebration evening bringing together sponsors, volunteers and participants at East Christchurch Sports and Social Club.

Cheques were presented to Christchurch Community Partnership for £2,371.91 and Julia’s House Children’s Hospice for £2,035.91, with further donations to a range of volunteer and community groups.

Sarah Penny, charity liaison for Christchurch Carnival, said their work with both charities goes beyond the weekend, helping the team “deepen our understanding of their missions and connect with their volunteers.”

Viv Charrett thanked everyone who helped stage the event, saying “we could not host such an event without your dedication, from volunteers to performers across the weekend.”

Kelly Gee added that volunteers are behind every aspect of the carnival’s success, praising those who gave their time and energy throughout the three days in August.

This year’s free festival ran from 15 to 17 August, featuring live music, children’s activities, stunt bike shows, a 1.5-mile parade, fireworks and a Tina Turner tribute.

Christchurch Carnival also noted growing recognition, with a gold award for Outstanding Community Support and a finalist place for Event of the Year at the DMB Tourism Awards.

Organisers are inviting early expressions of interest from volunteers, parade entries and performers ahead of next year’s dates from 14 to 16 August 2026.
