Dorset young carers charity featured on BBC One Show

A Dorset charity that works nationally to support young carers has been featured on BBC One’s The One Show.

MYTIME Young Carers appeared on the programme on 9 September, sharing the challenges children face when combining education with caring responsibilities.

The segment was filmed with Bishop Aldhelm’s CE Primary School in Poole, where staff and pupils worked with MYTIME to show how schools can transform their support for young carers. Viewers also heard directly from several young carers, including 10-year-old Emberly, who shared her daily experiences at home.

MYTIME’s Chief Executive, Krista Cartlidge, took part in the film and discussed the impact that reduced school attendance can have on young carers’ futures. She highlighted how the charity’s Level Up Programme helps schools across the country to identify and support children who may otherwise go unseen.

Speaking about the collaboration, Krista Cartlidge said the film “shines a light on the vital work their school is doing to identify and support young carers, and it highlights the tangible difference this type of support can make.”

The invitation to take part followed the release of MYTIME’s 2024 research report, “Unseen Sacrifices: Understanding the Educational Disadvantages Faced by Young Carers.” The findings inspired Harbourside Films, a Southampton-based production company, to co-create the short film with the charity.

Headteacher Scott Tait was also featured in the broadcast, leading an assembly on young carers for pupils at Bishop Aldhelm’s. The segment highlighted the importance of equipping both teachers and students with the knowledge to properly recognise and support classmates who care for family members.

With headquarters in Dorset, MYTIME works nationally through a range of initiatives designed to level the playing field for young carers. Its award-winning programmes provide training and resources for schools while giving young carers a stronger voice.

The One Show feature has helped bring the issue to a national audience, contributing to calls for schools to ensure that no child’s education or future opportunities are compromised by their caring responsibilities.

The film is available to watch on demand via BBC iPlayer from 18.12 minutes in.
