Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra takes chamber music to local venues

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will take its chamber music series ‘BSO On Your Doorstep’ into communities across the South West this autumn and winter.

The tour will include concerts in Blandford, Lyndhurst, Poole and Portsmouth for the first time, with performances also returning to Bournemouth, Sturminster Newton, Axminster, Bodmin, Honiton, Ryde, Winfrith and Yeovil.

Audiences will be able to hear live music in intimate church and community venues, with programmes designed to reach people of all ages. The series begins on 20 September in Honiton and continues through until February next year with events in Bodmin, Ryde and Yeovil.

The concerts will feature four different programmes performed by smaller ensembles from the Orchestra. These include ‘Serenades and Starbursts’ by a 19-piece string ensemble, with music from Tchaikovsky and Jessie Montgomery, and ‘Winter Fanfare’ by the brass octet with seasonal works for the colder months.

‘Musical Families’ brings together a 12-piece string group performing music by Gershwin and Coleridge-Taylor, while ‘Curious Creatures’ has been created for young families and mixes film, classical and contemporary works from composers including Mancini, Britten and Björk.

Head of BSO Participate, Lucy Warren, said the concerts will reach new audiences across the region. She said music “has the power to unite and inspire like nothing else” and the Orchestra is looking forward to creating memorable shared experiences in local venues.

Each performance will be presented by the musicians themselves, offering audiences a closer connection with the music and players.
