The Twin Sails Bridge in Poole has been closed to traffic after safety concerns were raised during a routine inspection of its lifting process.
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council confirmed the structure was left in an upright position from 4.30pm today and is now out of order while investigations are carried out.
A council spokesperson said: “Following a routine inspection of the lifting process of the Twin Sails Bridge this morning, for safety reasons the decision has been taken to leave the bridge in an upright position from 4.30pm today.
“Further investigation is required to determine the works that are required to bring the bridge back to operation. We will update residents as soon as we have more information.”
The closure means all traffic is being redirected to Poole Bridge, which continues to operate and provide access across the Backwater Channel for vehicles and pedestrians.
The Twin Sails Bridge, which links Hamworthy with Poole town centre, opened in 2012 and has become a key part of the town’s transport network. Its design, resembling yacht sails, was intended to symbolise Poole’s maritime heritage and support regeneration in the area.
Council officers are now assessing the inspection findings to establish what repairs or adjustments are needed before the bridge can be returned to normal use.
Updates on the situation will be issued once further information becomes available.
The Twin Sails Bridge cost £37 million to build and opened in April 2012. It has experienced several closures in the past due to faults with its lifting mechanism.
