Patients at Royal Bournemouth Hospital are benefiting from improved emergency care following the move of the Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) team into a new home.
The team relocated to a larger and more flexible space on 21 July. The move was completed in one day with no disruption to patient care.
The new unit allows staff to carry out faster assessments, make better use of resources and deliver more personalised care. This means more patients are now being treated in the right place at the right time.
Same Day Emergency Care is designed to help patients avoid unnecessary hospital admissions and reduce waiting times. By treating people on the same day and supporting them to return home, it also eases pressure on the Emergency Department and helps recovery.
Dr Kelham Slinger, Consultant in Acute Medicine, said: “It’s an exciting move that brings us closer to an ‘SDEC first’ approach – combining medical take and ambulatory care to achieve the same goal of seeing the right patient, in the right place, at the right time.”
The hospital has thanked staff for their efforts in making the move possible, recognising the work involved in completing the relocation swiftly while maintaining services.
Studies show that patients treated in SDEC units typically experience shorter stays, lower risk of hospital-acquired infections and higher satisfaction with their care.
The Royal Bournemouth Hospital is undergoing major redevelopment as part of the Dorset Integrated Care System’s transformation plans.
