Bournemouth charity helps over 500 families through crisis this year

Home-Start Wessex has supported a record 526 families across Dorset this year, reaching 1,716 parents and children during times of crisis.

The charity extended its reach into West Dorset last year after the closure of Home-Start West Dorset, and now covers a wide area including Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Weymouth, Bridport and Dorchester.

Increased support has been offered to single parents and homeless families, especially in the Bournemouth and Poole areas. Over the past year, 980 children have been supported, with new family groups launched in Weymouth and Dorchester and a Twins and Multiple Births group now running in Wimborne.

Home-Start Wessex offers one-to-one support in the home, and volunteers are at the heart of its work. Over 95 per cent of families supported report better wellbeing for their children, while 97 per cent of parents say they feel more in control.

The charity is actively recruiting volunteers and providing training, with a call for more local people to get involved. If you could spare a few hours a week to help local families through challenging times and make a difference in your community, please contact heidi@homestartwessex.org.uk. No experience is needed – just a big heart and a listening ear, as full training and ongoing support are provided.
