Dorset Police will roll out new mobile Police stations from September, in a move to make officers more visible and accessible in local communities.
The change comes as part of a wider update to how the public access services, with fewer people now visiting front counters and more choosing to use online services or attend local Community Contact Points.
A detailed review has led to a decision to keep front counter services at Blandford, Bournemouth and Weymouth. Front counters at Poole, Bridport, Gillingham and Sherborne will close in the autumn, though those stations will continue to operate for policing use.
The Mobile Police Stations and Community Contact Points aim to meet people where they are — in town centres, shopping areas and local venues — without the need to travel to a police station.
Assistant Chief Constable Steve Lyne said the changes reflect how people want to engage with the police and are part of a larger strategy to keep services efficient during ongoing financial pressure.
Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said the public has asked for more visibility in areas they already visit, and the new mobile units will help deliver on that goal.
