Christchurch Town Council is to host a grand celebration to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
It will take place on Thursday, 8th May, on Christchurch Quay, from 6pm to 10pm, as part of the nationwide commemorations honouring the end of World War II in Europe.
The council says the Quay will “transform into a vibrant post-war gathering place, evoking the joyful spirit of the street parties that marked the original VE Day in 1945.”
The event will feature live music performances from vintage and military bands, a display of war-time vehicles and family-friendly activities as well as historical displays and exhibitions.
Visitors are encouraged to join in war-time costumes and Union Jacks with a best dressed competition being held on the night.
Other attractions include gifts, face painting, fun fair rides and food and drink stalls.
As part of the national commemoration initiative, Christchurch will join councils across the country in observing a series of key moments, including the Town Crier’s Proclamation, the sounds of a Scots Piper, the lighting of the Beacon at 9.30pm, and the singing of ‘I Vow to Thee My Country.’
James Atkinson, Acting Town Clerk, said: “VE Day is a momentous occasion in our nation’s history, and Christchurch is proud to play a leading role in marking its 80th anniversary.
““We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to the Quay for what promises to be a truly spectacular evening.”
Mandy Polkey, Managing Director of Stir Events CIC: “We are incredibly proud and pleased that Stir Events CIC has been awarded the contract to deliver the VE Day anniversary celebrations in Christchurch.
“It’s a privilege to be entrusted with such a significant event that honours our history and community spirit.
“We look forward to collaborating with Christchurch Town Council once again to create a memorable and meaningful celebration for all.
