Townsend Youth Partnership receives £9,500 from the Morrisons Foundation to create sensory room

A Bournemouth charity is to create a sensory room for young people after receiving a £9,500 grant from the Morrisons Foundation.

The Townsend Youth Partnership, based on the Townsend Estate in Bournemouth, says the room will provide a vital resource to support mental health and wellbeing at the Townsend Youth Club.

Earlier this year, young leaders from The Chatterboxes, a YMCA Bournemouth project supporting young people aged 11 to 25 with disabilities, proposed the idea of a sensory calming room.

The specially designed space will be aimed at reducing stimulation and helping individuals self-regulate in a safe and calming environment.

It will feature equipment such as bubble tubes, rocking chairs and soft padding.

The building serves various community initiatives, including:

  • The Chatterboxes Disability Youth Action Project
  • Youth club
  • Community children’s project
  • Home education project
  • Contact centre

All the groups will have access to the sensory room as needed.

The Morrisons Foundation supports charities making a positive difference in local communities across England, Scotland and Wales.

It awards grants for charity projects and match funds the money that Morrisons colleagues raise for their chosen charities.
