The Post Office in Westbourne is one of over a hundred which is facing closure under restructuring plans announced today.
Up to 115 branches across the country are at risk of closing, along with hundreds of job losses at the head office.
The government-owned Post Office is looking at options for its loss making wholly-owned branches, which currently employ about 1,000 workers.
The Communication Workers Union said that for the company to propose the plans as the inquiry into the Horizon IT scandal continues was “immoral” and “tone deaf”.
The strategic review, led by the Post Office’s chairman Nigel Railton, is designed to overhaul how the organisation operates.
A major investment in the automation of cash and mails services in-branch is expected as part of the changes, reducing manual tasks and freeing up Postmasters’ time to serve customers.
Subject to Government funding, the Transformation Plan provides a route to add an additional quarter of a billion pounds annually to total postmaster remuneration by 2030 by dramatically increasing postmasters’ share of revenue.
