Firefighters attend large blaze at Somerley recycling centre

Four fire engines attended a late night fire at the Somerley recycling centre near Verwood on Tuesday evening.

Several appliances from DWFRS and neighbouring Hampshire and Isle of White Fire and Rescue service fought the blaze and were dampening down until the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 11:44pm yesterday with reports of a fire at a recycling centre in Somerley.

“Four fire engines were initially mobilised from Verwood, Ferndown and Ringwood along with two support appliances from Poole.

“On arrival found a fire within one of the rubbish cells which was well alight and requested additional resources which were mobilised from Hampshire FRS (Ringwood and Eastleigh water carriers, Fordingbridge and Burley fire engines).

“Four main lines were used to extinguish the fire and the incident was left open for a re-inspection this morning. This was completed and the stop was received at 9:04am. We don’t know the cause of this fire.”
