Wessex devolution plans have moved forward after a Government invitation to express formal interest.
The proposed Mayoral Strategic Authority would cover Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, giving local leaders powers and funding for transport, housing, skills, infrastructure and long-term economic growth across the wider region.
Leaders of the four councils said Wessex was “ready and uniquely placed” to proceed because every participating area already has unitary local government and no council reorganisation would be required before devolution begins.
They described the proposal as an opportunity to bring decisions closer to residents, unlock investment and support prosperity across every postcode in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and the 3 neighbouring council areas.
The councils said their aim has always been a mayoral authority and they are committed to working with the Government on an agreement matching the region’s “scale and ambition” and potential.
BCP Council previously approved joining the Wessex partnership at an Extraordinary Council meeting held on 15 January 2025, placing Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole within the proposed regional arrangement from that point.
