New trees will be planted in Bournemouth’s Lower Garden after a cherry tree was removed to make space for a Christmas ice rink that did not receive planning permission.
The tree was cut down by the park operations team, who assessed it as not thriving, and similar removals have taken place in recent years for the same reason.
Six replacement trees will be planted this autumn, funded by the Bournemouth Christmas Company, as part of site mitigation.
The new trees include a Great White Cherry, Cherry Blossom Kanzan, Liquid Amber Sweet Gum, Field Maple, and Paperback Maple, with two of the replacements being cherry varieties.
Annual billing for garden reinstatement works, including the new trees and ongoing maintenance, is scheduled for August.
The council has stated that there are no outstanding restoration commitments and that regular communication with event operators takes place to address concerns and ensure statutory regulations are met.
