Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council has decided not to reopen the Whitecliff entrance to Poole Park for motorists, following calls from some councillors and members of the public.
The permanent closure was confirmed in May 2024, despite concerns about increased congestion on Parkstone Road and the impact on local residents.
At a recent council meeting, Poole Town Councillor Xena Dion raised issues about health and safety, suggesting that closing the gate could worsen air quality due to stationary traffic and limit emergency access.
Councillor Dion also questioned the use of funds for landscaping instead of reopening the entrance. Councillor Andy Hadley responded that the closure is intended to protect green spaces and improve public health by encouraging walking and cycling.
He said the park should be a place for people to enjoy rather than a route for through traffic, and that the closure benefits both visitors and wildlife.
Councillor Hadley added that emergency access would be managed by the police and parks team if needed, and that the council remains committed to supporting access for people with disabilities.
