Diverse Abilities is organising the Cardboard Campout event in Christchurch, inviting people to sleep rough for one night in a cardboard shelter to raise awareness and funds for those affected by homelessness, especially people with disabilities.
The event will take place at The Treehouse on Merritown Lane, with participants building their own shelters and staying overnight. Diverse Abilities’ Advice Team supported three hundred people with disabilities who had no safe or permanent home last year, and the number of homeless disabled individuals has risen sharply in recent years.
The charity hopes the event will highlight the crisis and raise money to support its services, which help over one thousand five hundred disabled people each year access housing, benefits and support.
Elaine Ewing, Advice Team Manager at Diverse Abilities, said the event offers insight into the challenges faced by many in the community and can help provide hope and practical support to those in need.
