Police camera enforcement moves ahead

Plans to introduce traffic camera enforcement across BCP will go before councillors on 22 July.

The proposed Moving Traffic Enforcement function would allow cameras to be used where drivers enter blocked yellow boxes, make banned turns, drive through pedestrian zones or use routes closed to motor vehicles.

BCP Council received government approval for the powers in 2023 after a public consultation, and Cabinet is now being asked to approve a dedicated team within its parking service.

Monitoring at 21 example sites recorded more than 5,000 breaches in one week, while more than 70 collisions happened within 100 metres of the same locations over 3 years, including serious and fatal incidents.

Councillor Richard Herrett said the plans were about creating “safer streets, clearer junctions and more reliable journeys”, adding that the aim was to improve behaviour rather than catch drivers out.

No camera locations have yet been chosen. Any future sites would be selected using evidence including collision records, congestion and safety concerns, with residents and drivers informed before enforcement begins.
