Fire service backs drowning prevention week

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is supporting the Royal Life Saving Society UK’s Drowning Prevention Week.

The campaign runs from June 13 to June 20 and aims to teach children, teenagers, parents and carers vital water safety advice.

RLSS UK says 3,615 people have drowned in the UK and Ireland over the past five years.

This year’s campaign is also focusing on 13 to 17-year-olds, after data showed drowning deaths in that age group rose by 67 per cent between 2020–2022 and 2023–2025.

The campaign encourages people to follow the Water Safety Code, including staying together, stopping to assess risks before entering water and knowing what to do in an emergency.

Free water safety resources are available through the RLSS UK website.
