BCP urges parking fine powers

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council is calling for higher parking fines to be introduced permanently, or for an extended trial across the area this summer.

Council leader Millie Earl has written again to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander asking for urgent clarity.

The request follows a trial last August, when higher penalty charge notices were used on 543 coastal roads between Sandbanks and Southbourne.

The council says illegal and irresponsible parking fell during the trial, including fewer vehicles on double yellow lines and less obstruction at junctions.

BCP says the measures improved access for buses and emergency vehicles, reduced congestion and helped keep roads safer.

The authority says it submitted its findings to the Department for Transport in February but has not yet received an official response.

Councillor Richard Herrett said illegal parking worsens in summer and argued that last year’s trial showed stronger enforcement powers can work.
