AFC Bournemouth stadium expansion set for approval

Plans to redevelop AFC Bournemouth’s stadium are recommended for approval ahead of a planning committee meeting on May 22.

The proposal would see the demolition and replacement of the current south stand, along with upgrades and expansion works to the north, east and west stands and infilling of the stadium corners.

The scheme would add more than 9,000 seats to the stadium, taking overall capacity significantly higher, while also introducing new hospitality areas, fan zones, food kiosks and improved media facilities.

The new south stand alone would provide around 6,800 seats, including accessible viewing areas and upgraded concourses, toilets and concessions.

The club says the current stadium does not fully meet Premier League compliance standards.

Plans also include a new large screen, secure away coach parking, a relocated pedestrian and cycle route, additional lighting and new cycle and Beryl Bike parking.

Accessibility improvements would include a Changing Places facility, sensory room and 10 new lifts.

A Section 106 agreement linked to the development would provide funding towards transport and infrastructure improvements, including £110,000 for upgrades at Pokesdown railway station.

The council received 129 letters supporting the plans and 58 objections.

Supporters praised the potential economic and community benefits, while objections focused on concerns around traffic, congestion, parking, noise and the scale of the development.

Planning officers concluded that “the benefits of the scheme outweigh the adverse impacts on neighbouring amenity” and recommended approval.
