Sickness bug closes Ferndown Middle School

Ferndown Middle School is closed today after a sickness and diarrhoea bug spread through the school.

The school made the announcement yesterday, and confirmed all all pupils, including Year Six children sitting SATs.

Headteacher Grant Hopkins said the school had received confirmation from the NCA that Year 6 pupils would also not attend, meaning the school will now arrange “a whole school timetable variation” and find another date before 21 May for pupils to complete their final SATs assessment.

Parents were told the delay was approved because of what the school described as “real exceptional circumstances”, with staff and pupils praised for how they handled events during the day.

Grant Hopkins said: “The Year 6 children and staff have been amazing despite everything today.”

The school apologised for not being able to confirm the arrangements earlier, explaining that permission from the NCA was needed before the tests could officially be postponed.

Families have also been asked to help maintain the “integrity, security and confidentiality” of the SATs papers by ensuring children do not discuss test content with pupils from other schools who may already have completed the exams.

Parents needing support or information have been asked to contact the school by email while the closure remains in place.

The school will decide on Friday’s opening arrangements before lunchtime.

Nearby Ferndown First School and Ferndown Upper School are open as normal, but are monitoring the situation.
