School plans new classrooms in car park

Plans have been submitted to build new classrooms in a Bournemouth school car park.

The Bishop of Winchester Academy is proposing a two storey modular teaching block to provide six additional classrooms, with planning documents stating the school is currently “operating with limited flexibility” when it comes to available teaching space.

The new block would be built within the existing car park, resulting in the loss of 13 parking spaces, which the academy does not intend to replace as part of the scheme.

A design and access statement says the development would deliver “much needed teaching accommodation” and aims to support both staff and students by improving the overall learning environment and wellbeing within the school.

The documents also highlight plans to allocate 3 of the new classrooms specifically for religious studies, reflecting what the academy describes as its Christian ethos and a growing interest in philosophy and ethics at A Level.

The statement adds that the additional space would enhance the school’s teaching offer while helping manage demand and provide greater flexibility for lessons and unforeseen circumstances.

The proposal is currently open for consultation until 21 May under planning application reference P 26 01783 FUL, with a decision expected to be made by council officers.
