Liberal Democrat MP Vikki Slade has welcomed a successful bid to secure part of Upton Heath for nature.
The site, which had been due to go to auction later this month, has now been saved after a pre-auction offer was accepted.
The purchase was led by Dorset Wildlife Trust, supported by local councils and donations from the public.
More than £100,000 was raised in just two weeks as part of the campaign.
Speaking in Parliament, Ms Slade praised the efforts of local people and conservation groups in protecting the site.
However, she warned that further funding is still needed to cover outstanding costs and support restoration work.
She has also written to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to request additional support from a national species recovery fund.
Upton Heath is home to a wide range of wildlife, including all six native reptile species and multiple rare insects and birds.
While welcoming the outcome, Ms Slade said the scale of fundraising required highlighted the need for stronger protections for similar sites in the future.
She is now planning to present a petition signed by more than 1,500 people in Parliament, calling for further action to safeguard natural habitats.
