Mother releases book after daughter’s death

A West Parley mother has released a book following her daughter’s death last year.

Joanne Garcia-Dias said her 15-year-old daughter Alice died in December after taking a paracetamol overdose, and she has written about her life and the impact of her loss to raise awareness and help others.

She described Alice as “so caring” with the “biggest heart”, adding her daughter had “the loudest laugh” and a strong presence, while also highlighting pressures young people face, including challenges at school and online.

Joanne said she had not fully understood the risks of paracetamol before Alice’s death, explaining that “in one box is enough to kill you”, and warning that overdoses do not always have to be intentional.

She has also created an online page where people have been sharing their own experiences, saying “so many people are reaching out”, and adding that if her story helps “save one child”, it will make a difference.

Joanne is now planning future events and talks to help educate children and adults about the dangers and the importance of speaking up.
