Fundraiser launched for Winton Christmas lights

A community fundraiser has been launched to help keep Christmas lights in Winton.

The appeal comes after changes at BCP Council meant funding for Christmas lights was removed, with the authority previously saying the move would save around £50,000 as part of wider cost reductions.

Winton ward Councillor Chris Rigby said he organised the installation privately last year after being told in October that the council would no longer install the lights due to processing changes requiring private contractors.

He said the work involved arranging contractors, securing council permissions and obtaining legal sign off for the electricity supply so the festive lights could still be displayed along the high street.

Forge Motors contributed towards the project for the second year, while Councillor Rigby said he personally covered the remaining costs to ensure the display went ahead.

The new fundraiser aims to raise money for next year’s display and could also support plans for a Christmas tree in the Library Garden if enough funds are collected.
