Row over Poole Park cycle route upgrade

Councillors have approved plans to improve a walking and cycling route linking Poole Park and Broadstone Way.

The scheme includes funding for upgrades to the existing route, part of a wider programme of active travel improvements agreed during a council meeting in March.

During the meeting, an amendment was proposed to remove the project and instead use the funding for a cycling route in Hamworthy linking Turlin Moor to Boundary Road in Upton, but the proposal was rejected by 39 votes to 8 with 4 abstentions.

Councillor Gavin Wright said some residents view the work between the lakes in Poole Park as an attempt to make the closure of Poole Park Whitecliff Gate permanent, arguing the existing road is already suitable for walking and cycling.

Councillor Andy Hadley said the proposal came too late in the process after the programme had already been reviewed by the Transport Advisory Group and Cabinet.

He added the route between Whitecliff and Sterte is identified as a key link in the Local Walking and Cycling Improvement Plan, providing access past several schools and towards the hospital for people travelling on foot or by bike.
