The incident happened at about 11.40am on 28 March 2026 in Heathcote Road when a man reportedly shouted racial abuse from a vehicle at a woman who was walking in the area with her daughter.
Officers say the man was in a dark grey car which was being driven by a woman at the time of the incident, and enquiries are continuing to identify those involved.
Police believe there were a number of people nearby when the incident took place and investigators are asking anyone who saw what happened to come forward.
Police Constable Ollie Chant said officers take all reports of hate crime very seriously and are exploring all lines of enquiry as part of the investigation.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Dorset Police and quote the relevant occurrence number.
