Charminster Library to stay closed

Charminster Library in Bournemouth will remain closed for the foreseeable future following structural safety concerns.

The building has been shut since December 2025 after part of the ceiling collapsed.

BCP Council says detailed assessments have shown the historic building needs major repairs costing more than £680,000 to make it safe again.

The work would include removing exposed asbestos, replacing ceilings and roof structures, installing new lighting and carrying out external repairs to the roof and walls.

Councillor Andy Martin said the council cannot reopen a building that could put staff or visitors at risk.

He added the authority will continue to explore funding options for a long-term solution.

Residents are being encouraged to use nearby libraries at Winton and Castlepoint while the Charminster branch remains closed.

Library members can also access digital books, newspapers and audiobooks online through the council’s BorrowBox service.
