Purewell bus plans open for public consultation

BCP Council has launched a public consultation on proposals to improve traffic flow and bus reliability along Purewell in Christchurch, a route used by more than 46,000 bus journeys each year.

The plans form part of the Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan and follow feedback from residents, businesses and community groups. Proposals include removing some low usage parking sections during the day to create passing places, while keeping evening, overnight and Sunday parking unchanged. The busiest parking areas near shops would remain in place, with additional parking provided where possible.

Purewell is served by five bus routes, with up to nine journeys an hour linking Christchurch with Highcliffe, Bournemouth, Royal Bournemouth Hospital and destinations beyond the BCP area including New Milton and Lymington. School, Ringwood and seasonal open top services also use the route.

The Council says short delays can have a significant impact, with a two minute stretch between Purewell Cross Roundabout and Stony Lane sometimes taking more than 13 minutes. Councillor Andy Hadley said the updated proposals reflect calls for a balanced approach that keeps the area moving while protecting access to homes and businesses.
